Hina Matsuri is one of the five annual observances, Go-Sekku, that mark the changing seasons. A major feature of this celebration is the display of Hina Ningyo, special dolls representing the imperial family and their courtiers—arrayed on a five- or seven-tiered stand that is covered with a celebratory red cloth and placed in the best room of the house. The Portland Japanese Garden is proud to present the exquisite Loen and Sho Dozono Family hina dolls, gifted to the Garden in 2008—a complete collection of the finest-quality handmade dolls from Japan.

In most years, the Portland Japanese Garden holds festival celebrations on the weekend days closest to the traditional holiday dates. In 2013, the Garden will present a special family event on September 15, in honor of the Garden’s 50th anniversary. At this event, visitors will be able to experience aspects of each of the five festivals in a single day, for an exciting overview of the Garden’s festival programming and a very special anniversary celebration.
